DEMING — Prior to accepting a position with Solitaire Homes, Manny Chacon had been involved with Career Technical Programs at Deming High School and understood its vision. Solitaire is the Deming builder of manufactured homes.
Chacon is now the Human Resources Director at Solitaire, but remains a loyal advocate and supporter of the future endeavors for students participating in the DHS SkillsUSA Program.
When the DHS group traveled to Albuquerque last month for the New Mexico SkillsUSA Conference and Skills Competitions, Chacon was one of the first sponsors DHS Adviser David Monjaras contacted. Monjaras had been asked to initiate a state level volunteer program for the state competitions and requested sponsorship from Chacon and Solitaire.
Without hesitation, Chacon advised that Solitaire Homes would establish themselves as official DHS SkillsUSA sponsors.
Monjaras was able to use the sponsorship to buy New Mexico SkillsUSA Courtesy Corps T-shirts from Deming Print Workz. The T-shirts were issued to students from Deming High, Gallup High, Farmington Cate Center, Chaparral High, DACC/NMSU and NMJC Hobbs who were supervised by Monjaras at the event.
Courtesy Corps is the volunteer work component of SkillsUSA members. Students who do not run for state office or compete at the state level are offered the opportunity to be involved with the event by working with New Mexico Courtesy Corps.
Chacon not only provided Solitaire funding but also made a personal commitment for courtesy corps sponsorship with a $200 cash donation.
The DHS Chapter continues to solicit sponsorships and fundraising projects to assist with travel expenses for the National SkillsUSA Conference and Skills Competitions in Louisville, Kentucky this June.
The DHS Chapter will host a Family/Spirit Night at SONIC Drive In on Thursday. Ten percent of the proceeds from 5 to 8 p.m. will be awarded to the group.
The group is also selling raffle tickets for six different items. Coming soon to the DHS Campus will be Glow Bands – wrist bands that will flash cardinal red and navy blue “Wildcat Nation 2017." You can contact Monjaras at firstname.lastname@example.org or 575-494-1198 for details on fundraising events.
Luna County Juvenile Justice Continuum, Peppers Supermarket, 1st New Mexico Bank, Mimbres Memorial Hospital, Luna Energy, St. Claire Winery, Tractor Supply Co. Store, KZM’s Barbershop and Hair Studio have established sponsorship with DHS SkillsUSA thus far.
