Seventh annual cycling challenge to remember West Cumbrian brothers

The seventh cycle challenge in memory of two Cockermouth brothers will be held tomorrow.

Nicholas (Niggy) and Christian Townend

The Townend Challenge is in memory of Christian Townend, 29, and his 21-year-old brother Nicholas, known as Niggy, who both died in a road crash on the A595 at Moota while returning home from a cycle ride in December 2010.

The non-competitive sportive sets off from Loweswater Village Hall and is organised by the brothers’ friends and family.

The previous six annual events have raised more than £60,000 for Road Peace, a charity for road crash victims and their families.

Organiser Simon Farrell said: “We still have plenty of spaces and people will be able to enter on the day if they have not done it by 7pm today. We are really looking forward to the day.

“The number of Christian’s and Niggy’s friends and family that travel the length of the country to join in the ride goes to show how much they are missed by people who knew them.”
